Got this message from America:
Dear SPJ Region 11 Chapter Presidents/chapter advisers,
We're putting the finishing touches on details of the upcoming SPJ Region 11 spring conference April 3-4 in Phoenix. As soon as absolutely possible, please post the blurb below my signature with details on your chapter Web sites and blast e-mail it to your members and e-mai lists.
We are trying to encourage the greatest possible attendance for this event, which will feature many exciting and on-top-of-it-all speakers -- and will feature some great networking-and-fun after-conference opportunities in the revitalized and reverberating downtown Phoenix scene. Thanks. See you in Phoenix! --Mark Scarp, conference coordinator, Valley of the Sun (Phoenix) SPJ pro chapter. = = = = = =

Save these dates! SPJ's Region 11 Conference April 3-4 at "journalism starship,' the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Phoenix!

Start making plans now to see the very latest innovation in journalism education, the six-story, $71 million, 250,000-square-foot Arizona State University Walter Cronkite School of Mass Communication in downtown Phoenix, site of the 2009 SPJ Region 11 Conference, April 3-4.
While at what has been called a "journalism starship" and a "journalism theme park," hear top-notch speakers and get insights from cutting-edge experts on the challenges facing our industry as well as learn the how-tos of better journalism through the latest technology.
Plan to stay at the nearby Clarendon Hotel, site of the fatal 1976 car-bombing of Arizona Republic reporter Don Bolles. Today the Clarendon is an award-winning boutique hotel whose special rate for SPJ conference attendees will be $129 per night, single or double. Other nearby hotels will be available at comparable rates.
More details, including conference highlights, registration and more hotel information, will be posted starting Feb. 4 at www.spjchapters.org/arizona. Discounted early-bird registration will end March 4.

Mark of Excellence Awards

Got this letter in the mail yesterday for SPJ's Mark of Excellence awards which honors the best in student journalism.

I'm not sure if this is the same letter I got from Marytrini (stated below this blog post). But the entries for this award must be postmarked by Jan. 21, 2009.

Broadcast student members should be interested to know that there are five categories under Radio, and nine categories under TV.

I will have this application with me at tomorrow's noon meeting for anyone who would like to take a look. I'll try to find more information online.

For now, you could contact SPJ directly at (317) 927-8000, or e-mail them at awards@spj.org.

OC SPJ Mixer Canceled

Just got an e-mail from America saying that the Orange County chapter of SPJ canceled a professional mixer that was scheduled today in Irvine.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

DEADLINE: Summer 2009 internships

The first batch of internship applications were due in mid-October for papers such as USA Today and the Kansas City Star, and magazines like Entertainment Weekly.

These internships aren't limited to print journalism students. In fact, some publications welcome designers, photographers and graphic designers. It just varies on the publication.

Don't miss out on the next batch of deadlines on Nov. 1.

Papers with November deadlines:
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Austin American-Statesman, the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Detroit News, MLB.com, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Orlando Sentinel, St. Petersburg Times, and South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Student members should e-mail spj.csuf@gmail.com for a complete listing.

FYI: Be aware of deadlines. Example, make sure if a paper asks that the (application) packet be "sent by" or "postmarked" by a certain date. That's crucial if you're serious about having your application considered.

RECAP: Weekly Meeting 10/16

Our guest speaker was Randy Hagihara, hiring/recruiting editor at the Los Angeles Times.

He came in and gave tips on resume writing, cover letters and clips. He handed out copies of what kind of packet hiring editors expect to see from a college applicant. This workshop was handy for college students in any Communications field.

If you need more information, ask any of the SPJ student officers. We may be able to hand you a copy, or perhaps post something here on that.
